We gather to solve problems we can’t solve on our own. We gather to celebrate, to mourn, and to mark transitions. We gather to make decisions. We gather because we need one another. We gather to show strength. We gather to honour and acknowledge. We gather to build companies and schools and neighbourhoods. We gather to welcome, and we gather to say goodbye.’ The purposes, methods, tools and spaces of our gatherings, whether designed or not, have defined societies, social rituals, ways of living, and therefore the ways in which we also make our cities. In an exploration of social spaces, we wish to explore what is Convivial. Amongst other interpretations - from Spanish la convivencia, or better “peaceful coexistence in difference” to the Italian in convivialità, which translates in “spending time in friendship (enjoying a meal)” to the French convivialité, which describes “the ability to cohabit, also as immigrant societies”. Drawing from these traditional definitions, we reinterpret conviviality as ‘the ability of individuals to interact creatively and autonomously with others and their environment to satisfy their own needs’. It is this connection between the autonomous and creative individual and the collective that we wish to investigate. The “convivial society”, according to philosopher and theorist Ivan Illich, is governed by the fundamental values of guaranteed survival for all, distributive justice, generalised participation, autonomous and creative work and free access to community tools and goods (Illich, 1973). Almost half a century has passed since Illich theorised a new socially and ecologically responsible approach towards society, economy and&nbsp; architecture, and the ideas he presented are now more than ever relevant and full of hope. Contemporary phenomena and struggles which affect us all, from a global pandemic to a fast evolving climate crisis, highlight how it is essential to rethink our relationship between one-another and between humans and the environment. We intend to investigate contemporary rituals of commonality in the city, and the theoretical territories connected to them. From situated knowledge and vernacular technologies to social rituals, from cultural transformation to forgotten practices, we want to understand what Conviviality means today and what are the Tools which we can co-design; tools being objects, strategies, and most importantly, spaces. The Architect As the Host Looking at the architect as a host and facilitator, we seek to explore methodologies that nurture the agency of a place. In the process we re-discovers hidden or forgotten convivial practices to foster a sense of belonging and integration. ‘The architect is no more a miracle worker than a sociologist, neither can create social relations, although under certain favourable conditions they help trends to be formulated. Only social life (praxis) in its global capacity possesses such powers....’ (Right to the city, Lefebvre, 1968). Our teaching practice hopes to develop a space for learning and sharing knowledge which is underpinned by mutual exchange and sense of community. The “host” holds a key role in our teaching methodology, as this figure acts as the agent who creates the space for conversation, participation and exchange. In learning how to become hosts, students and tutors are asked to take ownership of their individual values, interests and personal research subjects, to be then shared with colleagues, tutors and the wider community. The Ordinary and the Unexpected Reflecting over Suzanne Halls’ notion of social change that builds on the apparently “banal dimension of the ordinary”, we hope to disclose the ways in which the ordinary can be adopted and modified into the unexpected as a key instrument to instigate a cultural and political process of renewal and reconfiguration (Suzanne Hall, 2015). We intend to experiment with design settings that enable us to be both guests and hosts, where power dynamics give way to circularity and a multi-directional curiosity. In this way we investigate the potential to subvert traditional relationships, giving a different socio-political meaning to the notion of hospitality. Here ‘guests’ are agents who create conditions that help us repurpose space, through the experience they have with others. In this manner we wish to dig deep into the “rich compost” of ideas, skills, knowledge, and fields of expertise surrounding conviviality as a spatial practice, threading new ways for collective learning that investigates, assimilates and digests the knowledge embedded in local ecosystems. Food, rituals and the performative Tracing back to the Latin term&nbsp; "convivium", meaning "banquet", Conviviality suggests “a full-bellied joviality”. On an etymological level, the concept of Conviviality refers to the food that serves life: the daily bread. If food lies at the basis of human survival, the way in which food is consumed and shared outlines the traits of culture identity and social rituals. Intimate, performative, shared and mimetic, the act of sharing food becomes the tool that allows us to go beyond preconceived ideas and limiting beliefs, allowing us to create new possibilities and scenarios. It embraces the need to design for complexity (and with complexity). We look at the power of food as the ultimate equaliser and connector, able to cut across cultures, political views, class systems and geographical boundaries. Food, in all its forms and rituals, is adopted as a design tool to create spaces where to host and facilitate conversations, decision making, participatory situated practice and co-design. Crossing the fields of art, architecture and ecology through what we eat, why we eat it and how, this creative and collaborative partnership finds joy in designing immersive performative acts, edible spaces and sculptures, site-specific interventions, hands-on thinking environments, reserach projects and new tools for sharing (and caring). FRITTO MISTO’s events, workshops, productions and performances take the shape of what is understood to be local, borrowing the language and the tools of the commons, the wisdom of our world’s kitchens, and celebrating the unique pool of resources and lore already present within each project’s context. “Critical conviviality”, “collective digestion”, “spatial fermentation” and “discursive dinners”, are some of the design methods used, while the food offer acts as a vehicle to develop new processes and recipes for the future. Having graduated from IUAV Venice, and after that from the MA Arch programme at Central Saint Martins, she has since developed a multidisciplinary practice which explores the idea of gathering and the new tools created by architects to foster participatory city making. Her work looks at how spaces, structures and rituals of food production and sharing can develop civic practices, promoting direct involvement and collective action, to transform and reclaim contemporary public life through conviviality. She has been involved in multiple public works projects. These included, amongst others, WetLab with Assembly, We Are Cally for Islington Council, R-Urban Poplar, Desiccate with Care for the Istanbul Design Biennial, High Tea Roots for Lore of Blackfriars, the Rotherhithe Public Living Room, the drawing of The Ministry for Common Land for the British Pavilion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale and&nbsp;the Jersey Potato Connosseur with Fairland Collective. Carlotta has taught at UAL, UCA Canterbury, UMA Sweden and is currently full-time acting leader for the first year of&nbsp;BA Architecture&nbsp;at Central Saint Martins,&nbsp;as part of the Spatial Practice programme. She&nbsp;studied Architecture in Sweden and India and holds qualifications in Architecture and Human Centred Design. She has considerable experience in using design and education to empower communities, foster a sense of belonging and integration. This has been of particular relevance in her work with non-EU displaced communities. She initiated a live research project (Interdine, 2019) investigating the moral role of architecture in a world characterised by mass displacement, using discursive meals as a platform for integration through food. Through the act of hosting, Interdine subverted the relationship between the guest and the host. Interdine has been nominated for the RIBA Silver Medal 2018 and shortlisted in the YTAA 2020. Gaia collaborated in the development of the Global Free Unit classrooms in Lesvos and Izmir in 2019 and 2020. She led workshops that enabled students of architecture to work together with volunteers and local residents to explore, analyse and map the refugee camps and provide&nbsp;a holistic understanding of the social and built context in a sensitive and critical&nbsp;way. The students later worked on design proposals that responded to key themes identified through their research.&nbsp;She has recently co-founded an international collaborative that connects spatial practitioners from Europe, Africa, India and the UK (Colact ,2021). In London she works as an urban designer at Publica , where she contributes to the development of major public realm visions, strategies and policy guidance, working closely with the city’s communities and stakeholders. On the ground, we explored the city of London through the realities which aim to reconnect us with the land and its stories. From humans’ earliest ingestions to current trends, we sought to understand our interactions with soil, while investigating the methods used to obtain it, consume it, heal through it, transform it, grow and build with it. ︎ PROCESS Where food lies at the basis of human survival, the way in which it is consumed and shared underlies a diversity of cultural identities and social rituals. For food, we all share a basic understanding: it connects us as an organic part of our daily routine, as well as the exceptional moments of our social existence. And in this role of necessity, food is political – an aspect which, now more than ever, needs addressing. ︎OUTPUT&nbsp; Over the three weeks of Summer School, the unit produced a number of prototypes, events, objects, small publications and digital media, all collaboratively collected in a shared archive which was presented in the form of a large scale performative meal on the 26th July 2023: In Soil We Feast. This 90+ diners strong gathering was curated, constructed and cooked by the students of the Craving Earth unit and brought into a focus the exploration of earth through an experimental food-scape made of corn chandeliers, potato snakes, fermented sour pancakes and jams, cured eggs and edible soil mountains. &nbsp; “You have to go underground. exhibition Constructive Land, a research project hosted by the Forest School, at the Lethaby Gallery. The exhibition was an interrogation of the forest, examining the future of the British landscape in the context of the climate crisis. ︎ PROCESS Fritto Misto was invited to bring to life an immersive, edible, Forest Bed to convey the growing concern for our forests within art and design education.&nbsp;Constructive Land was led by Material Cultures, Central Saint Martins. Supported by Forestry England and Dalby Forest. Funded by the SOM Foundation, Vastern Timber and the Forestry Commission’s Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Fund. ︎OUTPUT&nbsp; The meal re-enacted an edible Forest Bed with which guests were invited to engage physically and intuitively with forest food, guided by their senses and by their intuition. &nbsp; “We are facing a climate and biodiversity emergency. &nbsp; The Forest Assembly was a celebratory discursive dinner hosted to share the worked carried out by The Forest School and explore possibilities for its growing network and future collaborations. The Forest School is a platform and net-work operating across CSM exploring the Forest as a prism through which we can understand the causes and implications of climate and ecological emergency. ︎ PROCESS Throughout the Assembly, three provocations accompanied each course of dinner, these gave guests food for thought and material to discuss, whilst they engaged with the curated edible land- scapes. The evening was multi-sensorial and encouraged collaboration between guests, aided by tools created by designers and makers.To make this happen, Fritto Misto collaborated with a multidisciplinary team of CSM staff members working as artists, spatial practitioners, designers, curators and makers to design and curate the space as the dramaturgy for the evening. The meal featured a number of artefacts forming the food-scape and evoking&nbsp; the values guiding the Forest School, capturing the imagination of each participant through sensorial stimulation. ︎OUTPUT&nbsp; The immersive event was designed to be a fertile ground to prototype future collaborations. frittomisto https://frittomisto.net/MAKING-FUTURES making futures ︎ ABOUT&nbsp; &nbsp; Fritto Misto designed and hosted the performative meal to accompany the&nbsp;Making Future’s book launch&nbsp;and the Seminar on ‘Ethics of Care’ by Gilly Karjevsky and Rosario Talevi. ︎ PROCESS Making Futures is an experimental book bringing together the experiences and learnings of a two-year action-research project initiated by Raumlabour and the Berlin University of the Arts. The launch was hosted in collaboration with Public Works and R-Urban, a communal space for the circular economy in Poplar. Informed by the content of the book, the feast asksed its participants to interact with the food while reflecting upon the key questions raised by the book: what role architecture might play in the twenty-first century? What possibilities arise when we view architecture as a form of agency rather than as a collection of objects? What spatial dynamics emerge when we turn our practices away from the dictates of the neoliberal era with its obsession with growth and skimming off profit? Accompanied by the book readings, we sought ways to answer these questions together, around the table.&nbsp; ︎OUTPUT&nbsp; The book launch was designed as a constellation of disassembled and deconstructed objects that are yet to be explored, assembled and recomposed to test new possible narratives. Viewing hospitality as a spatial practice and a call to collective action, Fritto Misto asked participants to subvert the relationship between guest and host and in this process it gave a different political and social meaning to the act of hospitality, where guests open themselves to the foreigner, the stranger, the outsider, becoming themselves the host. With this meal Fritto Misto asked participants to reflect on their own agency as simultaneous guests and hosts of this landscape of possibilities. &nbsp; “We find the sense of making futures by weaving a dialogue that privileges an ontology of the process, one that is fluid between definitions, one that has more eyes than dreams and more hands than plans. It reclaimed the existing public space and hacked traditional and local food business models. This was to test a methodology to generate economic revenue directed towards local and international projects which connect to crossings in ethical and practical terms. ︎ PROCESS For the event taking place in Belmonte Calabro, Fritto Misto tested a collaboration with Pescheria Il Faro to produce a "fritto on water", using the Tranguilla as a floating shared table to serve food and acting as a central stage for discussion. Equipped with "carta-oleata" Fritto Misto created a ‘cuoppo- archive’ of practices and ideas. While eating, the ‘cuoppo-archive’ allowed diners to explore and take-home mappings of practices, projects and words which connect and relate us to one another. ︎OUTPUT&nbsp; Fritto served at sunset, accompanied by a presentation and performance by the shore and immersed in&nbsp;sea water. Buckets of fritto for guests - each with its own story - surrounded a central informal stage on the beach where Fritto Misto presentations, readings and collective discussion took place, generating
